Skate park to go ahead

15/08/2008 5:53:00 PM
Around 100 people flocked to the Swansea oval last Thursday to accompany Lake Macquarie City councillors on a ‘site inspection’.

But it quickly turned into a mini inquisition as mayor Greg Piper, councillors and council employees were bombarded with questions over concerns of flooding, lack of parking, lack of toilets and lack of security of the site for over an hour.

Not to be outdone, a handful of youth were also vocal in their position, backing council’s plans.

But in an embarrassing display of events, council had, in advance, laid out wooden site marker pegs without realising several teams from the Swansea Soccer Club were training that afternoon.

And despite being labelled a site inspection, council elected not to have a civil engineer present to explain the reasons why Chapman Oval was elected as the preferred site despite its flooding and drainage issues.

Mayor Piper apologised in both circumstances.

The heated discussions also included several past and present members of Swansea Soccer Club, including board member Denise Archer.

“We are not against the skate park – we weren’t informed of the magnitude of it.”

A spokesperson for council said the current amount of parking available was ‘acceptable’, stating that only 90 spaces were required for the three fields.

Resident Ruth Wilcox responded, stating more than 300 hundred cars visit the oval on a weekend, and expects more once the skate park has been built.

A council spokesperson responded by stating ‘I have never recorded a complaint with respect to this facility’.

Mayor Piper took the criticisms on board, but deflected several other concerns to other authorities.

“Everyone is worried about local security – there has to be more police, and (State Member for Swansea) Robert Coombes has to be pushing for it.”

Mayor Piper said ‘kids are kids’ and that ‘there is no one solution to this . . . perhaps we need to go ahead with looking at some modifications’.

Clearly rattled at times by the large crowd, Mayor Piper said ‘it’s not public meeting, it’s a council inspection’.

“We don’t have to be here, but we are.”

More than 100 people attended the council inspection of Chapman Oval. The discusssion between council and the public became very heated at times, with Mayor Greg Piper stating ‘it’s not a public meeting, it’s a council inspection’.
