The University of Newcastle Chamber Choir was declared the winner of Prime’s Battle of The Choirs last Sunday, August 3.
Usually a classically-inspired choir, it metamorphosed into a rock group for the competition, which was judged by Jonathon Welch, Iva Davis, Charli Delaney and George Torbay.
Choir member Peter Bird says the choir had undergone a trans-formation since entering the competition.
“It was a big milestone for us. We had to learn new songs, the choreography and learn all the dance movements. Rehearsals were pretty intense.”
The local choir of 40, snatched victory from two other choirs –Melbourne-VoxSynergy and Har-ambee – in the grand final and took home $100,000 and a recording deal with Universal Music.
Mr Bird says the win was unexpected but he was thrilled to be part of the winning choir.
“I had no idea what the judges were going to say. When we were announced as the winners, I literally passed out; I dropped down to the floor. I felt so overwhelmed.”
Newcastle stood out in the competition as the choir to move the most furthest out of its comfort zone by performing daring songs such as Queen’s Bicycle Race and Bohemian Rhapsody.
The choir hopes to use the prize money to establish a complete range of choral activities at the Newcastle Conservatorium for all people and to increase awareness of the benefits of being in a choir.
An album of the choir’s perf-ormances from the competition has been released by Universal Music and is available for through selected Australia Post outlets. – KYLIE ADORANTI
